Lima

Lima is the capital of Peru and is considered the country’s largest city. The city of Lima is located in a valley and comprises of the Chillon, the Rimac and the Lurin rivers. Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador, founded the city in the year 1535. After the Peruvian war of independence, the city became very important and was considered a major area for trade and commerce. Today, it comprises one third of the total Peruvian population and is famous for the Callao port.

A Brief History of Lima


Nicknamed, ‘the city of the Kings’, Lima is known the world over for its Inca settlements. Their ceremonial centers, called ‘the huacas’, are still preserved even today. The city comprises of various temples with special reference to the temple of Lati and Pachacamac and there are numerous instances of the Wari civilization before it was annexed by the Inca Empire. Peru was a Spanish colony which led to the Peruvian War Of Independence in the year 1821. Thereafter, the country regained its independence.

A Rich Cultural Mix


Lima is a city which is blessed with numerous inhabitants and while most are Peruvians, there are many who came and settled from Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany, French, British and regions of Central as well as Eastern Europe. Numerous official buildings including the Palace of Justice are located in the capital city. The headquarters of the Andean Community of Nations are also located in Lima. Numerous courts of law and related departments including the Presidential Palace are situated in the capital city.

The city of Lima is located in a flat plain and is considered the second largest city to be located in a desert after Cairo and is amongst the top ten metropolitan cities in the entire Americas. The climate is subtropical and desert type and is therefore considered pleasant for visiting tourists. The rainfall is scanty and hence there is a problem in the water supply. Considered the nineteenth most populist city of the world, a majority of the population consist of Mestizo, while the rest are white Europeans. There are a few Asians and the rest are blacks. The American influence can be sought through the existence of Miraflores Lima, which happens to be an American-Peruvian school.

Economy And Architecture


The city is considered the industrial capital of the country and handles two thirds of the entire industrial production. With over 7000 factories in the Metropolitan area and the availability of cheap and efficient work force, major industries such as shipping, fisheries, textiles, chemical and oil have made Lima their second home. The Monastery of San Francisco and the Cathedral of Lima are often considered a Spanish influence while numerous French styled buildings took over after independence.

Later, owing to war, the ‘brutalist style structures’, with special regards to the Museum of the Nation and the Ministry of Defense buildings, became the highlite of this capital city. The Park of the Reserve and Park of the Exposition are the two major city parks which located in the downtown region.

Culture And Languages


Owing to colonization and immigration, the city of Lima is often considered a judicious mix of Andean, Asian and European culture. The Historic Center of Lima is a world renowned heritage site, while the gastronomy of Lima is considered to be the best in the world. The city is also renowned to various museums of international repute. Lima is also famous for its beaches and has a judicious mix of pubs, restaurants, clubs and hotels.

All those who love to view theater; there is a provision for open air theaters. Open air theaters, dramas and dance performances and special performances for the children are staged on a regular basis. The Municipal Theater and the Japanese-Peruvian Theater are two of the prominent theaters in Lima.

The Monastery of San Francisco, the Convent of Santa Domingo, the palace of Torre Tagle along with the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas are considered ideal tourist attractions.
