Located in the south eastern region of Peru, the city of Puno is supposed to be a beautiful locale. It is situated on the shores of the highest navigable lake in the world called Lake Titicaca. The lake is located three thousand eight hundred and sixty meters above the sea level. Puno Peru is also the largest city of the Puno region and is located in the Puno province.
A Brief History of Puno
The city of Puno was established in the year 1668. Pedro Antonio Fernandez de Castro, the then Viceroy of the province, termed the city as the capital province of Paucarcolla. Puno Peru was earlier named San Juan Bautista de Puno, which was later changed to San Carlos de Puno after king Charles II of Spain. The city is said to be teaming with churches which had been built to cater to the Spanish population and also to the natives who were either forced or lured to convert to Christianity.

Puno is mainly an agricultural land. The main animals which graze the lands include llamas and alpacas. Puno Lima is primarily located in the South American Plateau region but it is also known for its vast plains. The city of Puno is surrounded by lakes and mountains, hence, there is very little land left to substantiate a human population. A closer look at the city and you would realize that there is less than two miles of flat land. This has led the inhabitants to occupy all areas, regardless of the vegetation or mountains that seem conducive to a humble dwelling. This has led to the poorer habitations being located on the steep hillsides which in turn are blessed with steep slopes. Puno is also considered the folk lore capital of Peru. The city is known for its culture and religion wish special significance to the dance form. If we talk about dance then there is special occasion wherein dancers from all across the city showcase their talent. The festival is called Virgin de la Candelaria. There is also the regional competition of Autochthonous Dance. There are a total of forty one islands in and around Lake Titicaca and the inhabitants of these islands, who are also known as Uros, are completely dependent on the influx of tourists.

Puno Peru is known the world over for its beautiful locales and floating islands.
