The local population is mainly dependant on tourism, handicrafts and cultivation, for their income. One of the biggest islands of Lake Titicaca is that of Uros, which a boat ride away from Puno is. The hand woven baskets, made in Uros, are some of the best in the region. Another place which is worth a visit is Taquile.

It is famous for its tribal culture, festivals and hospitality. You can find some very good hand made stuff and that too at a bargain price. If you love pottery and ceramics then you should not miss Pucara, on your Puno travel. Pucara is famed for its “Toritos de Pucará”, which you shouldn’t miss, at any cost.

Other places to see in Puno


El Mirador del cerro Huajsapata is a lovely location, which offers a panoramic view of Lake Titicaca and the city of Puno. It is an idyllic location to watch the sun set over the lake and the surrounding mountains. Other places, worth a visit, on your Puno travel, are El Balcón del Conde de Lemos, Museo Municipal Dreyer and the Cathedral.

Water sports in Puno


Being so close to the magnificent Lake Titicaca, it is but natural that Puno is a haven for water sports. If you are not quite so daring, then you can hire a ride in the ferry, to the islands strewn across the lake. The boat rides on the placid waters of the lake is very relaxing and enjoyable, especially around sunset. You can make it a day long excursion, when you go out exploring the different islands. However, do not attempt to swim in the lake, because the water is mostly icy cold, all year around.
