Feliz navidad mis amigos de Peru!

Just like many other countries, the most important night of the Christmas season in Peru is the 24th of December. It’s an evening where family and friends gather together to share in the celebrations of Christmas. Children get to stay up late and join in the festivities. A wonderful turkey dinner is one of the major menu offerings. A really unique addition to the meal that perhaps many westerners wouldn’t have is the serving of apple sauce. Although it is a common staple to serve with the Christmas hams.

If you are a visitor to Peru and are graciously invited into a celebration at a Peruvian house, be absolutely sure that you do not go without a gift. Ideally, a cake such as a paneton is greatly received.

Unfortunately, the display of fire works often enjoyed in other countries will not be available in Peru as there is a ban in place. At least this refers to the official setting off of fireworks. Many private homes will go ahead, buy them anyway, and display them at their residences.

Children anxiously look for presents under the tree from the world renowned Santa Clause. He appears to the children of Peru just like he does those in the United States. There is one problem with this scenario though. Being as December in Peru is the beginning of summer; Old Saint Nick has to endure the heat. That big red coat he wears sure doesn’t help matters any.

In the early part of the evening on the 24th, it’s the children’s time. Then as the night goes on it soon becomes time to tuck them into bed, and the adults now enjoy their time. Lots of dancing will begin at this time. Needless to say, ice cold beers are seldom refused as well. Time passes quickly and before anyone knows it, it’s the wee hours of the morning. These house parties have been known to continue on upwards till 5 am.

The people of Peru offer almost anyone a warm welcome. If you are a visitor to the country at Christmas time, you could very well get an invite to another persons house. Even if you are not well known. Do not forget to take a cake, as a show of appreciation for their hospitality. In place of the cake, you could take some liquor as well it will be most welcome.
